The question, “Why do Black girls’ literacies matter in today’s society” was posed by the Black Girls’ Literacies Collective (BGLC), a group of five Black woman scholars who conduct research and write with and about Black girls’ multiple identities and literacies in and out of academic spaces. The group met through conferences and doctoral studies, and wondered what it would look like to collaborate. Mc Arthur will be leading a critical media literacy collective, titled Beyond Your Perception, at the Jeremiah E. She will meet with a group of about 12 girls once a week throughout the 2016-17 school year, using media to historicize social activism and tap into the girls’ agency. Mc Arthur expands on this notion in her article “Black Girls and Critical Media Literacy for Social Activism,” published in a special issue of the journal this July.
